    What Our Students Say

    "A Real Eye Opener"

Tânia Costa Hynönen works at Citec as a manager for the civil Chief Design Engineers. She studies for Master Degree in Project Management at VAMK.

Why did you choose the Degree programme in Project Management?

I have wanted for a long time to take a master degree. I felt that the master program in Project Management was a very good complement to my base studies, very much due to my role in the projects I participate in. It is also a good degree for a possible future career development related with the project work.

What was good or bad in your degree programme?

I think the good part of this master program is that I have learnt more about the organizations. I have definitely learnt more about project management but the most enriching for me was to learn about parts of the project in which I haven’t been involved earlier and also about the organizational context of projects. It was a real eye opener to have to investigate the company I work in from these different perspectives, and to be able to understand the whole company. The bad part was the lack of practical application when it came to software.

How have you succeeded to combine studies, family and work?

I have booked the studying time in my calendar every week and have always pushed to be ahead of the courses schedule because I knew that if I started to slip the schedule it would be a lot harder to catch up. When studying, I devote my full attention to it. I have mainly studies in the evenings after my son goes to sleep but the classes on Saturdays and the group works have of course taken away quality time for my family.

Tell about your “normal” work day?

My role includes resourcing of my team and competence development, participate in projects with the role of Chief Design Engineer or Project Manager and be involved in the related sales activities. My work days change according to the project workload and also other internal issues that need my attention.

Do you think the degree will help you in job markets or give you better prospects?

I think the degree complements my base degree very well. It is a very good way to learn the theory behind part of the work I have been performing for the last 5 years. I have wanted to learn project management not only through my colleagues but also in an official way so I would know the right way to do things.
