International collaboration aids career transitions and career guidance

The current working life places various pressures for change on both individuals who are employed or seeking work, as well as on professionals who support them. In an international project coordinated by Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, individuals are supported at different stages of their career path, with particular attention to those at risk of social and economic exclusion.

The fast-paced working life and the new skills required by changes in the job market challenge individuals to update their competencies, engage in continuous learning, and make even significant career changes. Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK) coordinates a new European initiative that supports individuals navigating career transitions, with particular attention to those at risk of social and economic exclusion. The project promotes inclusion by developing tools and training that improve access to employment, education, and career guidance.

”Through an innovative and human-centered approach, the project helps individuals identify their skills, set career goals, and access practical support in planning their professional paths. At the same time, Career Compass strengthens the capacity of guidance professionals by offering resources and methods to enhance their work with diverse groups,” tells Tanja Oraviita from VAMK, the project manager and the coordinator of the Career Compass project.

Helping individuals and supporting professionals

The project addresses the needs of two main groups: individuals facing uncertain employment situations—such as young adults entering the workforce, older workers, women, migrants, refugees, and people with lower education levels—and the professionals who support them, including career advisors, trainers, and job counselors.

“The Career Compass project is about giving people direction at times of change. By supporting both individuals and professionals, we aim to create more inclusive and resilient career pathways,” says Oraviita.

International partnership and concrete tools

The project is carried out by a transnational consortium of four organisations from Finland, Spain, Poland, and Greece. The project is co-funded by the European Union.
Project work began with benchmarking research in early 2025 to identify effective career guidance practices across Europe. In March, a large-scale survey gathered insights from individuals in transition and professionals in career services.

“These findings will inform the development of training materials and a toolkit, to be piloted later in the project,” Oravita clarifies.

By emphasising social inclusion, digital accessibility, and design thinking, Career Compass aims to improve equal access to career support. Its results will benefit not only local communities but also contribute to wider European goals for inclusive education and employment.
