aims to find and implement actions that promote industries’ carbon neutrality. Smart Industry uses digitalisation to develop green and smart industry.
Vaasa University of Applied Sciences’ new research, development and innovation platforms bring companies, communities and other public actors together with research. The platforms offer practical solutions to sustainable development, welfare services and smart everyday life. The platforms work in a phenomenon-oriented and multidisciplinary manner so that new information can be put into practice as quickly and seamelssly as possible.
VAMK helps in creating smarter society
research activities develop smarter cities and environments in a sustainable way. Smart City improves the functionality of living environment and promotes carbon free city as well as green energy solutions.
responds in a socially and ethically sustainable way to societal challenges such as the aging of the population by utilising digitisation, financial know-how and service design.

Juho Heiska works at VAMK as senior lecturer in energy technology. He came to VAMK after having completed his dissertation at Aalto University in the field of chemistry related to battery technology. In the RDI field, he works, among other things, as the coordinator of the Nordic Battery EDU belt network. The purpose of the network is to promote Nordic battery education cooperation. In his opinion Smart City finds intelligent solutions that are easy to use but also transparently sustainable.
“In an ideal situation, when a person lives in a smart city he doesn’t even know it himself, but choosing the most sustainable option has been made the normal and easiest choice. Technological solutions are already available for many things, and all you need is the willpower and the ability to put them into practice.”

Research and development in the energy sector is Ossi Koskinen’s passion. Koskinen, who works as a senior lecturer in VAMK’s business administration unit, has a doctorate in business sciences and did his dissertation on management. In 2006, however, a flame was ignited in the management team of the joint energy institute of VAMK, the University of Vaasa and Novia, which has not dimmed.
”My own interest is strongly linked to the environment. Global warming is a fact, and in order to slow it down, we must focus on developing renewable energy solutions and related technologies, such as energy storage. Vaasa region has excellent prospects for developing also new business models, and the Smart Industry platform can be an important partner there as well.”
VAMK’s RDI platform serves also the small and medium sized companies in the region by by offering the most recent scientific research results from Finland and abroad.
”With our own work we strengthen the strong and wonderful energy cluster of our economic region. The key to successful cooperation is a listening attitude.”

Riku Niemistö is known as a wide-ranging developer of well-being services. He has been involved in the planning of provincial health and social services, for example in the organisation of child and family services.
As a senior lecturer in the social and health field, Niemistö has seen how valuable multidisciplinarity is both from the point of view of professionals and the customer.
”Well-being issues are often complex. A multidisciplinary approach is needed especially for customers who use a lot of services. A common platform makes it easier to face people as a whole and to solve problems in a multidisciplinary way.”
In the welfare services of the future, the prevention of problems and accessibility will be taken into account even more. Digital services can also help with that.
