ODDS Hub speeds up innovations in dual-use and defence technology

Vaasa University of Applied Sciences has launched ODDS Hub to promote collaboration in dual-use and defence technology especially in Ostrobothnia. ODDS offers SMEs, startups and research centres an innovation ecosystem and a possibility to network, strengthening the conditions for technological development.

Changes in the international operating environment have opened up new opportunities for companies in the defence industry, in dual-use technologies, and in international markets. However, Finnish companies, especially those in the Ostrobothnia region, may not yet have a full understanding of how to best take advantage of these new opportunities.

ODDS Hub (Ostrobothnian Dual-Use, Defence and Security Hub), launched by Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, responds to this need by promoting regional cooperation initiatives in particular, but also national ones. In this way, the operating conditions of especially Ostrobothnian SMEs can be improved, and business opportunities in the field of dual-use technology can be strengthened.

The aim of the ODDS hub activities is to move toward an ecosystem where startups, SMEs, research institutions, and industry leaders are provided with a dynamic environment for collaboration that leads to new innovations and business opportunities, while also helping SMEs develop their expertise and stay up to date with the latest industry developments.

”This way we facilitate the development of new innovations in the companies and help actors connect with broader innovation ecosystems both in Finland and abroad. All of this strengthens the security landscape, resilience, and promotes a more sustainable, technologically sovereign, and comprehensively secure society,” says RDI Director Marja-Riitta Vest.

Strong demand from companies

ODDS Hub works as a link from Ostrobothnia to national clusters, programes and networks. The aim is also to facilitate access to funding channels and programs. In this way, companies operating at the intersection of dual-use products or researching them are strengthened, and the full-scale adoption of innovations is supported through research, development, and commercialisation.

A survey conducted among companies highlighted the need for coordinated collaboration in Ostrobothnia, specifically network-based activities and ecosystem work to support innovation.

”There is a clear signal from the companies. SMEs in Ostrobothnia want seize the opportunities created by changes in the security environment to expand their markets. As a strong partner to the region’s business community, VAMK is taking a leading role in promoting the matter,” tells Vest.

ODDS Hub coordinator Jari Ratilainen has extensive experience in supporting various incubator and startup activities. “He sees the ODDS Hub as an important player, especially as a facilitator of joint projects.

”We want to provide the framework for co-development of innovations, increase stakeholder awareness, and establish new development projects to strengthen regional research, development, and innovation activities, as well as research capabilities,” clarifies Ratilainen.
