Success Comes from the Courage to Step into the Unknown

At Vaasa University of Applied Sciences’ alumni event, attendees heard Riku Rantala’s keynote speech on the courage to build a career that reflects your own aspirations and values. For students, Rantala had a clear message: Graduate!

At the Vaasa University of Applied Sciences’ alumni event held at the Vaasa City Theatre on 23 October, attendees heard an inspiring keynote speech from Riku Rantala, Finnish journalist, author and adventurer. In his presentation, Rantala took the audience along on fascinating journeys to different corners of the world.

According to Rantala, success is not built on carefully laid plans but on the courage to step into the unknown, seize new opportunities, and learn amid uncertainty. He reminded the audience that different cultures, people, and experiences can teach us valuable lessons about ourselves, collaboration, and navigating change.

“Building a career that reflects who you are requires courage, and courage is something you can train. The best way to develop it is to gradually face your fears and then simply keep repeating the process, again and again,” Rantala advises.

Reflecting on his own career path, Rantala highlighted the importance of continuously developing professional expertise and embracing lifelong learning. He also emphasised the value of curiosity, passion, and the ability to laugh at oneself.

The Courage to Build a Career of Your Own

Rantala also had the opportunity to speak to higher education students from Vaasa during a discussion session held on the Julia Stage at the Vaasa City Theatre. During the event, Jimi Oosi, a Social Services student at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, interviewed Rantala.

When asked what it takes to succeed in the future, Rantala encouraged current students to invest in their interpersonal skills and general knowledge. He believes that individuals with broad and diverse expertise will have better-than-average opportunities to thrive in the age of artificial intelligence.

Rantala also emphasised the importance of human connections.

”Study languages, learn about different cultures, and explore the world. The ability to connect and interact with people is essential, because that is something machines will never do as well as humans.”

He also encouraged students to make the most of their time studying.

“Take full advantage of your student years and do as many fun things together as you can. Later in life, experimenting and trying new things often becomes more difficult. Now is the time to do it.”

In closing, Rantala had a simple and clear message for the students: “Graduate!”
