Project Description

The project approaches system development from the perspectives of system solutions, data-driven business, and networked ecosystems. It focuses on customer-oriented, creative, and productive design practices, processes, and methods. The role of visualization, co-creation, and rapid prototyping in developing innovations is emphasized.

The identified ecosystems in the collaboration project are transport, construction, and the metal industry – all of which play a central role in reducing environmental impacts.

Objectives

The DesignPSS project focuses on designing sustainable product-service systems. System design combines expertise in design, business, and technology for the development of sustainable and digital business. The project:

Develops system solutions together with companies
Produces open demonstrations of product-service systems
Builds a system design development toolkit
Develops research competence to initiate more impactful projects

Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK) is an innovative development partner and pioneer in design. We celebrate 35 years of design by turning our focus to the future – the youth. A sustainable future society needs both technological solutions and a human approach. Future changes especially affect young people, yet their role in discussions about the future is sometimes too limited. Together, we can respond to the challenges and hopes of young people, creating an attractive and sustainable Vaasa region.

The IMPACT change campaign for the future makers is not about collecting money but actions. These actions can be small or large – steps towards a better future. No one builds the future alone, which is why we ask for partners to join the change. What is your promise? How will your organization contribute to building and achieving our shared goal?

VAMK’s promise is to bring together young people, decision-makers, experts, and influencers in Vaasa. Together, we will develop the Vaasa region into a place where young people are inspired to build a sustainable long-term future.

The invitation events will be held mainly in Finnish, but participants may use both national languages (Finnish/Swedish) as well as English.

Content of the IMPACT Events

Design Buffet

The building blocks of our region’s vitality and attractiveness are skilled and enthusiastic people! Now it is time to focus on young adults and reflect together on how we can make the Vaasa region an even more attractive place to live and work. Design Buffet offers a breakfast where students can share their wishes on wall boards and spark the change. We invite teachers to share what they promise to do for young people’s meaningful lives. Based on these wishes, we will jointly develop ideas with our partners and turn them into concrete actions.

Design Buffet also opens the doors to MUOVA’s new premises. Welcome to explore our design exhibition and innovative projects. A breakfast buffet will be served for the first 100 participants, but the doors will remain open throughout the morning. Come join us, make an impact, and be part of the change!

Design Think Tank

The Design Think Tank brings together young influencers of the region, stakeholders, and experts to address the challenges and wishes raised by young people to strengthen the attractiveness of the Vaasa region. The Design Think Tank builds a shared vision and makes commitments to concrete development actions. The results of the workshop will be published to the media and compiled into a podcast series on Design Day 2024.

Design Lounge

Design Centre Muova has been building an innovative and sustainable future together with companies and partners for over 35 years. We celebrate our shared journey by offering Design Think Tank invitees a cocktail event with a local tasting menu and drinks, live music, and a collaborative artwork. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit the From Line to Space exhibition at the Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art.

VaasaHack

“VaasaHack” – Hackathon event brings together 90 VAMK students to innovate new business ideas around four selected challenges. The event is organized at Wärtsilä’s Sustainable Technology Hub in collaboration with Vasek. The number of employees in Vaskiluoto has grown rapidly in recent years, but the services in the area have not kept pace. For one of the challenges, students will therefore innovate new business ideas to improve the employee experience in the area.
