Project Description
Resource-wise solutions are based on the idea of sustainable and low-carbon operations, which are implemented through four key areas:
- energy efficiency, solutions requiring less energy, and the use of renewable energy
- material efficiency and the wise use of natural resources
- circular economy
- minimisation of waste
A central element is also a holistic approach, where instead of sub-optimisation, attention is paid to the environmental impacts of solutions throughout the value chain and life cycle.
The REWISE project (Demonstration Platform for Resource-Wise Industrial Ecosystems) was implemented by Design Centre MUOVA at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences and the Vebic Research and Innovation Platform at the University of Vaasa.

Resource Wisdom in Ostrobothnian Companies
What do companies in Ostrobothnia think about resource wisdom? And what do international studies say about it? The Rewise team produced a report on the topic.

Demonstration Platform for Resource-Wise Industrial Ecosystems
The Rewise project developed a demonstration and research platform, as well as demonstrations to illustrate resource-wise industrial solutions. The virtual reality demonstration platform is located at Design Centre MUOVA.
Resource-wise solutions are related to energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, material efficiency and the wise use of natural resources, circular economy, and the minimisation of waste. The demonstrations were developed iteratively in two phases, focusing on different strategic perspectives of resource wisdom:
- Energy-wise metal industry: use of renewable energy and data-driven energy efficiency optimisation
- Equipment manufacturers’ services for resource-wise wood production: data-driven value chain and service platform
Visions for the Metal and Forest Industries
The project produced five-year visions of future resource-wise ecosystems in the metal and forest industries. The visions were developed in cooperation with regional companies, researchers, and stakeholders, based on trend and sector analysis. VR Demonstrations
The project developed VR demonstrations to illustrate industrial value chains, ecosystems, and product-service systems. The following videos were produced from the VR demonstrations:

Information and Calculation Model for Life Cycle Analysis
The environmental impacts of the visions were assessed using Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). LCA models were integrated into the VR demonstration platform. We published four videos on the role of life cycle analysis in developing resource wisdom. Expert: Bening Mayanti, University of Vaasa.
