Project description

Challenges related to the yield potential of crops—particularly rapid fluctuations in extreme weather conditions such as heat, drought, and cold, as well as the deterioration of soil quality—are rapidly expanding the market for biostimulant products. Biostimulants improve crop stress tolerance and nutrient uptake efficiency. They are produced from various natural ingredients, such as plant extracts and algae. The project’s key partners are producers of fish biomass raw material, namely fishers and fish processors. The project has been prepared in cooperation with Aktion Österbotten and Novia.

Goals

The main goal of VAMK’s KalaYmppi project is to produce and test biostimulants made from domestic fish. The overall objective of the project is to support the bio- and circular economy and to develop environmental expertise, thereby promoting the implementation of regional strategies by creating the conditions for sustainable living and bold entrepreneurship in rural Ostrobothnia.

Results

The project will lay the groundwork for extensive collaboration between various stakeholders in future projects, which will focus on developing biostimulant production processes as well as productizing and marketing them for bioeconomy applications.
