Welcome to a documentary event dedicated to life and humanity – stories, experiences, connections, life itself!

What remains when the steam rises and the layers are shed? The Room for Cultures with all the co-operative partners are proud to screen Miesten vuoro (Steam of Life), a documentary that captures the raw, beautiful vulnerability of people sharing their life stories in the heat of the sauna. While the film follows the male experience, the themes of resilience and connection speak to us all. Thank for Alma Adult Education Centre is generously sponsoring this screening.

The Food: What would be a sauna event without sausages? After the screening, there will be traditional grilled sausages (with vegan options available). Let’s see if the Dj will find his way there too!

The Shared Dialogue: The “sauna spirit” will be brought into discussion tables. In a safe environment you can reflect on the film and change thoughts. What is it to be a man/woman in 2026? What is it that brings you peace or joy? How do the responsibilities feel like? These facilitated small-group talks are designed to be easy to participate in, so no skills or certain kind of attendance are required.

Also listening to the other peers is attendance.

The talks are facilitated in gender sensitive groups (men with men, female with female) and held by peers – by ordinary men, ordinary women. English and Finnish groups available. However, these discussions will be held in partnership with Mielle ry and Mieli Pohjanmaa, as they know very well how Our Minds Matter.

Finnish men speaking from the heart in the documentary is a beautiful reminder of the strength found in vulnerability—a message for the whole community. So, join us in creating a culture of openness.

Warm regards,

Tilaa kulttuureille – Room for Cultures, VAMK, SeAMK, Alma Adult Education Centre, Vaasa Library and Cultural Services, Mieli Ostrobothnia, Youth Mental Health Centre, Sekasin, Mielli ry, Vaasa Settlement Association, and the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia

Program

15:00 Documentary screening at Vaasa Main Library.

16:30 What would a sauna event be without sausages? Cold refreshments and hot sausages.

17:00 Shared dialogue: creating a “spirit of the sauna” around discussion tables. Reflecting—together with peers—in a safe environment on the thoughts and possible emotions sparked by the documentary. What is it like to be a man/woman in 2026? What brings you joy, peace, or helps you recharge? What does responsibility feel like?

The facilitated small-group discussions are designed to be low-threshold and easy to join. No prior skills or specific way of participating is required. Listening quietly to others also counts as participation.

The discussions will take place in gender-based groups (men with men, women with women). The facilitators are peers—ordinary men and women, not professionals or acting in professional roles. They come from different age groups and backgrounds, so you can participate in your own language (Finnish, Swedish) or in English.

The discussion sessions are organized in close collaboration with Mielle ry and Mieli Ostrobothnia (Nuorimielikeskus, Sekasin project), as they recognize and emphasize the importance of mental well-being.

Come as you are and help create a culture of openness. See you on May 23!

We reserve the right to make changes to the program and schedule.
