Swimming between goals – merging studies and sport

Vaasa University of Applied Sciences is one of the athlete friendly universities recognised by the Finnish Olympic Committee. The Athlete Friendly University quality mark is a recognition of the comprehensive consideration of athletes’ needs during their studies. Business student Greta Beszteri has successfully combined both university studies and elite sports.

Greta Beszteri, who began her studies in autumn 2023, has focused particularly on marketing. She feels that combining goal-oriented sports with studying has been surprisingly easy.

”VAMK athlete status and flexible teachers have made everyday life easier,” Greta says and continues:

”I’ve been able to arrange exam dates and deadline when needed, and the teachers have been understanding when training or competitions have taken up time.”

“Sports have been practically beneficial for my studies, as they have taught me good time management, perseverance, and goal setting, which are all valuable skills in higher education as well.”

“In addition, for example in group projects, teamwork skills come directly from the world of sports,” Greta reflects.

Practical studies boost motivation

The business studies have been diverse and practical, which keeps Greta motivated:
“It’s been nice to see that teachers use a variety of teaching methods – like group work, projects, and case exercises, which bring variety and real-life relevance to learning.”

Although training, camps, and competitions take up time, she has made new friends and been able to participate in student events whenever her schedule has allowed.

“Because of sports, I can’t always attend every event, but I’ve definitely felt welcome and part of the group,” Greta rejoices.

Combining studies and sports made easy

In five years, Greta hopes to be working in marketing or real estate, and still be involved in sport either competitively or by staying physically active.

“I want to build a career that combines the lessons I’ve learned from both my studies and sports.”
