Project description

Many green transition technologies are water-intensive. Water management is essential when implementing investments in the green transition. Hydrogen production, battery manufacturing and recycling, carbon capture, utilization and storage, biomass production, and biofuel production all require water resources, either as raw materials, for cooling, or, for example, as a sink for emissions management. These water-related needs are not sufficiently addressed across sectors in various strategies and legislation, which can lead to delays and suboptimal implementation of investment projects.

The project focuses on cross-sectoral and cross-administrative collaboration in the water sector to integrate water resource considerations into the planning, permitting, monitoring, and environmental impact assessment of clean transition investments. The project gathers information on best practices and identifies opportunities for cross-sectoral further development and novel collaboration. Its goal is to enhance the clarity, transparency, and efficiency of the operational environment for clean transition investments, for example, by improving local acceptability and accelerating information gathering during permitting processes.

Goals

The primary objective of the project is to promote the sustainable development goal of clean water, with particular emphasis on comprehensively considering the impacts of clean investments on water resources already in the early planning phase. A concrete objective is to produce a water roadmap supporting clean investments, serving both regional needs and functioning as a national guideline.

Results

The project will result in a water roadmap for clean investments, consolidating information to enhance the climate resilience of water strategies and support clean investments. It will provide baseline data to strengthen regional water strategies, support the preservation of carbon sinks, and promote sustainable investment practices that consider water resources. The project will produce reports on legislation and permitting processes, recommendations for streamlining investments, a guide for industrial water management, as well as communication materials and campaigns to implement the project results in practice.
