Smart Industry
Renewing industry as an engine of sustainable, intelligent and resilient growth
Smart Industry focuses on the holistic transformation of industrial and energy systems in response to the demands of the green transition, digitalisation and operational reliability. The research area integrates solutions for the energy transition, industrial digitalisation, circular bioeconomy and the resilience of industrial systems. Together, these enable the transformation of energy, production and material flows into low-carbon, intelligent and reliable industrial solutions as well as new business models.
The Smart Industry research area brings together expertise in technology, data, bioeconomy and security on a shared development platform. Its activities strengthen the competitiveness and innovation capacity of companies and support the development of sustainable and resilient ecosystems at regional, national and international levels. Research and development are carried out in close collaboration with companies and other stakeholders, with a strong emphasis on practical applicability of solutions.
Net Zero Energy Systems
examine the transformation of energy systems towards low-carbon and carbon-neutral energy production and use. The research covers energy storage, the hydrogen economy, and the production of biogas and biomethane. It supports the transition towards sustainable, flexible and intelligent energy systems in industry and society.
Digital & Smart Manufacturing
transforms industrial production through digitalisation, automation and robotics in intelligent production systems. The research utilises data and automation to improve efficiency, quality and flexibility. It strengthens competitiveness and supports the shift towards smart and digital manufacturing in industry.
Bio-circular economy
promotes sustainable use of natural resources and solutions related to biomass and aquatic ecosystems within circular economy principles. The research develops solutions for bioresources, nutrient cycles and water in bio and environmental technologies. It supports transition to circular economy and sustainable resource management.
Resilient Industrial Systems
strengthen the safety, reliability and resilience of industrial and energy systems. The research addresses the resilience of critical infrastructure and processes as well as preparedness for changes and disruptions. It supports security of supply and the reliable operation of essential societal systems.
