Work-Based Learning
Internships are a vital part of your nursing education at VAMK—and a powerful way to practice Finnish in real-life healthcare environments.
- Each internship is co-supervised by a subject teacher and a Finnish language teacher, ensuring both your clinical and language learning goals are supported.
- You’ll be actively using Finnish in patient care, team communication, and documentation, with English available as a support language when needed.
- Supervisors and staff are trained to provide language-aware support, helping you grow in confidence and fluency.
- You’ll be encouraged to engage in real conversations, ask questions, and reflect on your language use in everyday situations.
A nurse is an expert and innovator in nursing care, performing diverse and responsible work.
As a nurse, you will be responsible for planning, implementing, and delivering personal care, as well as providing support to patients through various clinical procedures. You will also carry out assessments and tailor care to meet each patient’s individual needs, even in demanding situations.
A key part of your profession is the prevention and treatment of illnesses, assessing the condition of patients using various methods, and supporting their functional ability during illness.
We emphasize in-person instruction—because skilled nurses are not made without it.
Your work will also include guiding, advising, and supporting patients’ loved ones. At VAMK’s Nursing program, you will get hands-on experience in a wide range of care situations—from operating rooms and emergency care to maternity nursing.
Contents and Pedagogy of the Nursing Education Program
During your nursing studies, you will gain a strong theoretical foundation and learn practical skills through simulations in a modern clinical skills training environment at the University of Applied Sciences. Your studies will include 50 weeks of practical training in various healthcare settings, and you will also complete a thesis project based on real-world professional practice.
The nursing program includes various projects and events, which help you develop essential teamwork and organisational skills needed in the profession.
Structure of the Education
The nursing education consists of General basic studies, Professional studies, and Practical training periods integrated throughout the program.
The university of applied sciences studies also include elective courses based on your interests and a thesis, which demonstrates your ability to apply evidence-based knowledge and holistic thinking.

Admission Methods: Choose What Works Best for You
The degree programme in Nursing offers two ways to apply: Rolling Admission and Joint Application. Rolling Admission lets you apply throughout the application period and receive a quicker decision. Joint Application is a centralised process where you apply to multiple programmes at once during a specific application period.
