Industrial Engineering and Management – Where Technology Meets Business

Are you ready to become the professional who understands both how things are made and why they should be made?
In our Industrial Engineering degree programme, you’ll gain a unique combination of technical know‑how, production expertise, and business insight—skills that companies value now more than ever.

  • Learn to Build Smarter, Greener, and More Profitable Operations
You’ll explore modern methods for producing efficiently, sustainably, and with top‑quality results. You’ll also learn how to ensure that operations remain profitable so that companies can grow and stay competitive long into the future.
  • Hands‑On Skills Used by Real Companies
Our teaching is closely aligned with the practices and tools used in local and international industries.
  • Designed for Today’s Industry Needs
We continuously develop and update our curriculum to ensure it reflects the latest trends, technologies, and employer expectations. Our goal is simple: to help you build a versatile skill set that opens doors to exciting career opportunities.

The work of an industrial engineering professional has transformed rapidly in a short time.

Traditional manual production processes and paper‑based tracking systems have been replaced by digital solutions, automated production control, and real‑time process data. As an industrial engineering expert, you will dive into production planning, process optimisation, production analytics, project management, and continuous improvement. Your work will make a concrete impact on how companies operate, helping them enhance efficiency, quality and competitiveness.

Could Industrial Engineering Be Your Path?

Step Into the Heart of Modern Industry

The Vaasa region, with its strong energy cluster, is one of Finland’s most significant hubs for export‑driven industry. Companies are expanding, and new talent is constantly needed. As an industrial engineering professional, you operate at the intersection of technology and business — at the very core of industrial operations. Throughout your studies, you will gain expertise in both areas and can choose which one you want to emphasise. The field welcomes diverse talents and is an excellent choice for everyone, regardless of background or gender.

Strong Connection to Working Life

In VAMK’s Industrial Engineering programme, you learn skills that employers truly value. We maintain close cooperation with industry, ensuring we understand what kinds of experts companies need. Thanks to these partnerships, students benefit from abundant opportunities for summer jobs, internships, and thesis topics — and, most importantly, excellent employment prospects after graduation.

Smooth Pathways to Further Studies

As a Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Engineering, you also have excellent opportunities to continue your studies all the way to a doctoral degree. We collaborate closely with the University of Vaasa, located on the same campus. Together, we have built clear study pathways that can lead you to a Master’s degree, a Master of Science in Engineering, and further to doctoral studies.

Master Your Skills Through Teamwork

Teamwork plays a central role in the Industrial Engineering programme. Throughout your studies, you will participate in project assignments where you design, develop, and optimise production processes in collaboration with real companies.

Project work builds practical skills such as production control, process planning, quality management, and resource allocation. At the same time, you strengthen your communication and presentation skills by learning to explain design solutions and process improvements clearly to your team and instructors.

Projects may include tasks such as optimising a production line, improving product manufacturing processes, or analysing the efficiency of machinery and equipment. Working with real industry assignments provides valuable hands-on experience and prepares you for the demands of future working life.

In team projects, everyone contributes their own expertise, and together you learn to understand the bigger picture, find solutions, and make decisions that support production efficiency and quality.

What You Will Study in Industrial Engineering

The programme combines technology, production, and business.
You will learn the methods used to produce efficiently, with high quality, and in an environmentally sustainable way. You will also gain an understanding of how operations remain economically viable, ensuring that companies stay competitive and future‑ready.

We use the same tools and methods that companies in our region apply in their daily operations. Preparing you for roles in global industrial projects and export‑driven business.

The programme covers, for example:

  • Technical foundations of production systems
  • Production methods and principles of production management
  • Quality, environmental and safety management
  • Business, economics, profitability, and creating customer value creation
  • Supply chain management and enterprise resource planning (ERP)
  • Leadership and management skills
  • In addition to the core studies, you can specialise according to your interests by broadening or deepening your expertise. You can choose from current, industry-relevant 15‑credit modules in various engineering fields — such as robotics, battery technology, hydrogen economy, sustainable development, data analysis, data utilisation, and artificial intelligence.

We design and update the contents of our degree programmes regularly to ensure they remain up-to-date and meet the needs of working life. We reserve the right to make changes.

The Field of Industrial Engineering and Career Opportunities

An industrial engineering graduate is a true multiskilled professional: flexible, adaptable, and often multilingual. Employers also value strong negotiation and presentation skills. By combining technical and business expertise, you gain access to a wide variety of roles across industries. Long-term thinking is essential, especially in project work where you must acquire new knowledge, apply and integrate it, and evaluate solutions from an economic perspective.

You may work in large international export companies or in smaller local businesses — in subcontracting workshops, assembly plants, factories, engineering offices, or even as an entrepreneur.

As an industrial engineer, you stay up to date with industry developments and know how to apply them to evolving production methods, always taking sustainability into account.

Your job title as an Industrial Engineer could be:

  • Production Supervisor
  • Project Manager
  • Production Manager
  • Production Engineer
  • Quality Engineer
  • Process Engineer
  • Production Director
  • Factory Manager

Vaasa, a Beautiful City With Global Connections

Our university is located in the heart of Vaasa, which has more energy technology related companies than any other city in the Nordic countries. In our region, more than 160 companies work in the field of energy technology, and about 25 % of the employees of the Finnish energy sector work here. The overall turnover of these companies is about 5 billion euros annually, and therefore it is well justified to say that Vaasa keeps the wheels of Finland’s economy rolling!

EnergyVaasa is the largest energy technology hub in the Nordic countries

This has made it a world leader within different technologies, such as smart electrical solutions, sustainable energy, flexible power generation and digitalisation – to mention a few. In Vaasa local universities, energy technology companies and municipalities work intensively together on research, product development, innovation and education. No wonder the Vaasa region is regarded as the most innovative area in Finland.

Technobothnia

At VAMK, you will spend a lot of time in Technobothnia, a top-quality teaching and research laboratory. There you will be able to take part in projects for companies and practice practical skills with equipment that is also used in the companies.
